POMPTON VALLEY MUSIC TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION - AWARDS

II.        GUIDELINES:
 
A. Number of Performances:
 
Performances may include a combination of Master Classes and Recitals. Students may perform two memorized Solos or any combination of Solo, Duet, Duo or Concerto not exceeding 10 minutes. Duet & Duo repertoire need not be memorized. Students level Senior I and above may perform one memorized Solo. Students missing a performance due to emergency or illness will have the opportunity to perform in the next month’s recital free of charge, fees are non refundable. Students who wish to perform in “back to back” recitals in a given month; not due to emergency or illness will be required to pay for each recital. If two recitals are not available in that month, programming will be handled on a case by case basis.
 
                       
1. The student will receive a composer bust after giving three (3) performances during a given school year. Each new school year will feature a specific composer:

2. For six (6) or more performances, the student will receive an Engraved Trophy.
 
B. Achievement Levels:
                                   
1. The student must perform from memory during a given school year, two (2) compositions from one of the level categories indicated below in order to obtain an Achievement Level Award.
 
2. A composition that meets similar technical and musical standards as those suggested for each category level listed below will also qualify.
 
C. Senior Year Plaque:
 
1. A student must have studied piano a minimum of three years – at least 1 year and currently with a member of PVMTA. The student should be an active participant in PVMTA student events. This is a performance award and not related to achievement level.
 
 
*ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL CATEGORIES
 
Junior –
            1.         A 17th or 18th century composition
            2.         One movement of an easy Sonatina or a Sonatina having only one movement
            3.         Solo of choice
 
Early Intermediate –
            1.         Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Any selection from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach
            2.         Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty:   Clementi op. 36, No. 1 or 2 any movement
            3.         Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: Burgmüller Twenty-Five Easy and Progressive Studies, op.                                   100; Kabalevsky Twenty-Four Little Pieces, op. 39 or any solo by Gillock, Nevin, Olson, etc.
 
Mid Intermediate –
            1.         Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Any selection from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach
            2.         Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty: Kuhlau Sonatina, op. 55 No. 1 either mvt.
            3.         Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: Any selection from Schumann Album for the Young, op. 68.
 
Late Intermediate –
            1.         Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Bach Twelve Short Preludes – easier two-part inventions
            2.         Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty: Two contrasting movements of a Sonatina or one movement of a                                   Sonatina and one contrasting piece in cantible style – Clementi Sonatina, op. 36 No. 3 & 4
            3.         Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: Chopin Mazurka in a minor, op.67, No.4; Debussy Le Petit                                     Négre, Gillock Lyric Preludes
 
Senior I –
            1.         Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Two-Part inventions (difficult selections) 
            2.         Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty: Mozart Sonata No.1 (K.545) – Beethoven Sonata op. 49, #2                                          (1st mvt. Or 2nd  & 3rd. mvts.)
            3.         Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: Easy Chopin Waltzes, Preludes, Mazurkas, Debussy’s                                            Golliwog’s Cake Walk
 
Senior II-
            1.         Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Three-part inventions, suites, (selected dances)
            2.         Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty: Mozart Sonatas K. 283 or K. 330
            3.         Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: More difficult Chopin Waltzes, Preludes, Mazurkas
 
Young Artist –
            1.         Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Bach Preludes and Fugues
            2.         Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty: Mozart Sonatas (advanced), Haydn Sonatas (advanced),                                               Beethoven Sonatas (op. 14, No. 1)
            3.         Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: Difficult Chopin Nocturnes, Etudes, Ballades; Debussy                                         Preludes, Etudes
